Science and technology are taking such rapid strides that it is becoming impossible to keep up with it nowadays. Hardly a day goes by without the introduction of some new technology.
Most of them address the problems that we are facing with the current generation gizmos while some of them are quite innovative in their own rights. The latest technologies to be used to protect electronic files are the electronic document retention system.
You can allow the electronic file to deactivate itself at any given date and time. This is done using special software that encodes the digital file’s header with some information. When the file is launched it fist accesses the net. If net access is not permitted then the file will not open. Once the file has accessed the net, it will check the date and time with a central server belonging to the company that manufactures the software.
If the time limit set by the author of the electronic file has not expired, it will open. If the time limit has expired, it will give a warning to that effect. This technology is being used in more ways than one.
When you go to hire a video from the video rental store, they make a copy of the video on a DVD and mix the expiry date of the movie before passing it on to the customer. Each DVD player has its internal chip-based clock that cannot be tampered with.
The moment one inserts the DVD on the player, the encryption routine checks the date on the chip. If you have rented the DVD for 24 hours, you can be rest assured that at the end of that period the DVD will not play anymore.
This is the beauty of technology. The same program can also be used to encrypt data files too. Imagine a scenario where the guests attending the annual general meeting of a company are provided with DVDs of the company’s performance. The encoding allows the DVD to be active for 6 hours from the time the meeting has started.
This allows the participants to check out the same at their leisure. Once that time has expired, the DVD cannot be used again. If you thought that you would make a back up of the DVD, be rest assured that the DVD has got an anti copying routine encoded too. There are countless uses of this routine and one can just imagine how useful this software will be. This is the way digital files will be offered via the net. You will be provided the opportunity to hear the song for a day before you have to purchase it.
